Pakistani Forces Violent Suppression of Balochistan Doctors
Hospitals, medical facilities, and medical colleges throughout occupied Balochistan are severely underfunded and lack the supplies and equipment they need to operate effectively.
On April 7th 2016 in Quetta, Balochistan, a group of over 250 medical professionals held a protest rally in front of the Balochistan Government Assembly building during the Balochistan Assembly session.
According to the YDA, for the past nine months the salaries of physicians in residency have been withheld. Although there are full-time positions available in the Balochistan provincial health department, the government is only hiring for short-term temporary positions. In Quetta, and throughout Balochistan, many hospitals lack necessary diagnostic equipment such as MRI machines and CT scanners. Essential pharmaceuticals and other medicines are also in short supply, if they are available at all.
The Young Doctors Association (YDA) was holding a peaceful rally when a large deployment of police and security forces arrived on Insqamb Road near Liaqat Park, the heavily armed detachment quickly moved in on the protesting doctors and without warning commenced a violent crackdown against the demonstrators.
State security forces reportedly injured at least seven and arrested as many as ten doctors during the crackdown.
